Reddit Alternatives
I’m not leaving Reddit. I love the site, despite all its craziness right now, and I don’t think it’s gone the way of Digg. Yes, I used to be a Digg “power user” and I left Digg for Reddit during the huge Digg exodus. Reddit isn’t there, or anywhere close, to be quite frank. But because a lot of people are asking for Reddit alternatives, here are a few suggestions that I’ve seen:
Here are a few #Reddit alternatives Click To TweetDigg
As ironic as this is, Digg released a redesigned website today and is trying to take full advantage of the calamity on Reddit. But I don’t trust Digg. I’ve been burned. 🙁 Take a look at their current front page:
You’ve gotta love the picture of Reddit beating Reddit up on Digg’s front page, along with another story with the headline: “You Seem Upset. Let’s Talk. Maybe About What Digg’s been working on?” Followed by “We’ve been working hard on bringing conversations back to Digg…” Yes, because THAT is why your site died!!! #stillbitter
Voat.co
This suggest, Voat.co, is floated around the most. So much, in fact, that the site has imploded and its servers are overtaxed. I have no idea what the site is like, personally, because it’s been down all day. It’s basically a clone of Reddit, from what I’ve heard, only not as nice. And it jumped from 50,000 to 500,000 users today, hence the implosion.
Voat is even set up similarly to Reddit, with “subverses” rather than subreddits, indicated by /v/, rather than /r/. In an interesting twist, people can actually earn money on Voat via bitcoin if their submission is really highly rated. So that’s kinda cool. I’m not exactly sure how it works, but it has something to do with earning a percentage of ad revenue that their post brings in. And by the way, in case you’re not familiar with Voat, it was originally called “WhoaVerse” and just changed its name in December.
Snapzu
For some reason, people on Reddit get mad when it’s mentioned? Snapzu is similar in some ways to Reddit. Stories are tagged and can be upvoted or downvoted. Each story also has a comments section. It seems to be fairly active, with the top stories currently standing at 31 upvotes (about traffic surge on Snapzu) and 84 upvotes about Reddit with 82 comments. Not bad.
You must request an invite to be able to use Snapzu. Like Reddit, it also has communities. The categories are smaller in number, including News, Entertainment & Sports, Life & Personal Interests, Social & Reaction, Pics & Gifs, business, gaming, politics, video, science, tech, and more. I’ve heard the site isn’t as opinionated as Reddit and tends to be “duller.”
Aether
Aether is a decentralized message board app that you install on your computer. Essentially, it’s a free community app where you can write and create content via anonymous forums. You can download a version for Mac, Windows, or Linux. It’s surfacey like Reddit, but decentralized with no central server, working peer-to-peer instead. All posts disappear in 6 months, so it’s “ephemeral.” Kind of like a Snapchat Reddit, you might say. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments below.
Stacksity
Stacksity is another simple site where subreddits exist as unmoderated stacks. Like Reddit, you can subscribe to the stacks you’re interested in. It’s a newer site and, not being moderated, you might encounter more unpleasantness here. Each stack is preceded with a “$” and the top stacks are $cute, $discuss, $lol, $fitness, $food, $gaming, and more. The top stacks right now just have 22, 6, 17, and 12 votes (one of them being “Never Gonna Give You Up” because… Stacksity is 3 years behind on trends?) Everything is stacked in one vertical column, so this might interest you or annoy you.
Tumblr
Some people on Reddit are really pushing Tumblr, and other people are really mad about that. So it’s your call. It can apparently be pretty good if you find the right people to follow, but the “never-ending scrolling page” format can be annoying to some. Tumblr’s been around for quite awhile, but it’s being suggested as an alternative if you want something with a totally different feel.
Others Mentioned
Hubski has gotten a mention, as minimal message board where you show approval by sharing content and commenting rather than voting. You can follow users, tags, and domains rather than sub-message boards. A post rises to the top when it’s shared a lot, rather than when it gets voted on. You can also filter out specific tags and users.
Fark has been mentioned, with the commentary that it’s just “not the same” anymore and the userbase is too low to be very meaningful.
Hacker News has also been mentioned, but the word is that it’s more like a technology subreddit than a good Reddit alternative in its own right. And it’s invite only.
LNKit is in beta and has a Pinterest feel to it, with photo-driven links that can be upvoted.
Campus Society is like a Reddit for college students only. You’re grouped by university and classes. It’s in beta, having just gone live on Monday.
There are more mentioned in this post on Reddit.
I for one will be staying on Reddit for the time being. What will you be doing? Let me know in a comment below!
