Twitter is ablaze with “David Lynch leaves Twin Peaks!” news, and the news has left ME very sad. 🙁 It seems like something had to have gone terribly wrong with Showtime for Lynch to leave. I mean, he was so excited about it so recently. The show will still go on, but without the person who made it so crazy great. :-/Lynch says Twin Peaks will go on without him. Showtime wants him back. Just 6 months ago, Lynch posted a cryptic message before the official announcement about Twin Peaks’ return.
Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style! #damngoodcoffee

This was quickly followed by Kyle MacLachlan’s tweet:
Better fire up that percolator and find my black suit 🙂 #Twinpeaks

The original news was that the show would start in 2016, consist of nine episodes, and Lynch would direct all of them. The show’s return would be 25 years later, just as Laura Palmer said to Cooper: “See you in 25 years.”
So what happened????
David Lynch is very forthcoming on his Twitter feed. The bottom line, he says, is that Showtime didn’t want to put enough money into the show to make his vision a reality.
First, this is a HUGE loss. I can’t even imagine what his vision was and why Showtime, if it’s going to all the trouble of bringing back Twin Peaks, wouldn’t fulfill Lynch’s vision?Lynch doesn't think Showtime is putting enough $$ into Twin Peaks. Click To Tweet
On the plus side, apparently Lynch and Frost have already written all nine scripts. But I wonder if they will have to change the scripts at all if the production budget isn’t high enough?
Meanwhile, Showtime has announced that it’s still trying to work things out with David Lynch. And its webpage for Twin Peaks still lists Lynch as the director. But whether this is just damage control remains to be seen. Back in March, Lynch made dire comments at an Australia panel about the show, saying he wasn’t sure Showtime was even going to go through with it and that there were complications. Showtime denied Lynch’s statements.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens. But the plot twists sure are in line with Twin Peaks itself. If you enjoyed this post, please subscribe to the blog below. 🙂
